Changes to Shopify’s 2023 Plan Pricing

shopify

When Shopify was started in 2006, it was a novel product with a novel idea: to provide the best commerce tools in the world to all merchants of all sizes, to make commerce better for everyone.

A lot has changed since then, but a few things haven't: why we do it and who we do it for. The price we charge for access to the best tools in commerce has remained largely unchanged for the last 12 years. Today, after much deliberation, we're announcing a change in favor of better serving our mission and our merchants: We are updating our pricing for Basic, Shopify, and Advanced plans: Our pricing page outlines the new prices.

Existing merchants won't see a price change for three months. The updated pricing is now in effect for new merchants, and they can explore Shopify and build their businesses for as little as $1 per month during their paid trial. Shopify is still the best value in commerce.

Switch from monthly to yearly terms to keep your current monthly price before new prices take effect on April 23, 2023.

A business built on change

Shopify, and the tools that we build, have always been driven by an insatiable desire to make more possible tomorrow than is imaginable today. Our mission is to enable more entrepreneurs and more kinds of businesses to build and create across all surfaces, all around the world.

We have continually raised the ceiling so that we outpace the impossible. And when we raise the ceiling we also raise the floor, so that merchants joining and using Shopify today have access to tools that we couldn't have dreamed of existing 16 years ago. We obsess over your success, and how to increase it by building more into our platform. Your success is our success.

A small change that enables big change

The idea behind the products we create has always been the same: we offer merchants the most powerful, innovative, and reliable tools in the industry at a price that's unmatched in the market. But what that means, and the resources required to live up to that promise, have changed dramatically since we started.

In order to not change the value of Shopify, we’ve had to change the price.

This change allows us to continue to solve some of the most difficult problems in the industry with the people that are best suited to solve them. It allows us to continue making more possible and empower more people to become entrepreneurs, and to do it at a pace that's necessary to make commerce better for everyone.

Above all else, it means that we don’t have to compromise. It allows our merchants to continue to exist in a world where their dreams for what their businesses can become never have to contend with what is possible.

We thank you for your support, now and always, in allowing us to continue doing what we do best for many more decades to come.

We’ll keep making Shopify the best platform to sell things anywhere your customer is and we’ll keep creating a culture of innovators and builders pushing forward the frontier of commerce. We’re not slowing down.

Updates to checkout extensibility

We’ve added new DatePicker and Disclosure checkout UI components. DatePicker will help you build customizations to select specific delivery dates, while the Disclosure component will help with UX patterns that progressively disclose information, like the long list of line items in a bundle.

Additionally, checkout branding now supports custom fonts. Checkout, accounts, and UI extensions inherit these fonts making experiences consistent across surfaces.

Together these capabilities will help merchants upgrade to checkout extensibility.

Build apps powered by Shopify Functions

Checkout validation and product bundle apps powered by Functions will soon be generally available to merchants, which means now’s the time to start building these tools if you want to capitalize on the new opportunities presented by Functions.

Get started building an app that ensures purchases meet a specific criteria before completing a checkout, or an app that groups products together as a bundle. Or, learn more about Shopify Functions below.

Changes to support requests for app charge refunds

As of May 3, 2023, merchants will be required to contact partners directly if they want to request a refund for an app. Shopify Support will no longer reach out to partners on behalf of the merchant to facilitate their request.

This change will streamline the refund process, as refunds are at the partners’ discretion and partners have the ability to issue most refunds themselves. The exception is still reversals to pending charges. In these cases, we highly encourage partners to issue application credits, which Shopify Support can then apply to the invoice.

Please contact Partner Support with any questions about this change.

Deep linking for theme app blocks now available

We’re making it easier for merchants to install apps in context. App developers can now generate a deep link that takes merchants to the theme editor, where a desired app block will be added automatically for the merchant to preview and adjust prior to saving.

Deep linking simplifies your app's installation flow, because merchants won't need to navigate to the theme editor, find the block, and then act on it. Instead, your app does the work for them. Because merchants can preview the block, you're providing them with control over what they include in their storefront.

Partner email verification

To keep the Shopify App Store safe and secure and to better serve our partner community, we will begin enforcing partner email verification.

Your contact information allows us to share important information and updates related to your business. It also enables us to make sure that every account is created by a real person with real contact details, which helps us keep the app store safe for all users.

Account owners, please use the banner in the partner dashboard to verify your email as soon as possible to avoid restrictions to your dashboard access.

The Emerging Art of Prompt Engineering

TDS Editors
Towards Data Science
3 min readMay 18

By now, even the most casual generative-AI tinkerer knows that the specificity of one’s prompt determines, to a large extent, the quality of a model’s output—whether that’s a realistic image, an on-topic paragraph, or a code block that actually works.

Many industry leaders claim that prompt engineering—the practice of tailoring your input to improve the model’s on-task performance—is a skill with a limited shelf life, given how rapidly AI technology is advancing. That remains to be seen; for now and for the foreseeable future, designing better prompts remains a practical skill worthy of data and ML practitioners’ attention.

To help you develop your prompting chops, we’ve selected some of our best recent articles on the topic, covering a wide spectrum of use cases and experience levels. Let’s prompt away!

What Is Prompt Engineering?

Prompt engineering is an emerging and lucrative domain in the tech industry that is getting popular with the bloom of AI models. In this domain, engineers with the relevant skill sets communicate with AI models like ChatGPT and Midjourney and guide them to generate the desired result.

promptengineering

Prompts are basically some specific texts that trigger the AI models to produce a response that caters to the desired criteria. And prompt engineering is a natural language processing concept where the engineers have to be experts in inputs that will get them the desirable output from the AI model when passed through it.

The main task of prompt engineers is to create and refine the prompts that will guide the AI models to generate the desired result. They are the ones who can communicate with AI chatbots efficiently that run on substantial language models and scale them up. This engineering field is one of the critical aspects of the modern AI paradigm.

Moreover, prompt engineers are responsible for fine-tuning and structuring the input data that is used for training AI models to maximize their efficiency. The quality of the input data set provided by prompt engineers must be high because a poorly designed prompt will decrease the likelihood of getting the intended response from the AI mode.

Historically, this domain emerged out of necessity as AI experts weren’t able to communicate efficiently with the AI system and get the response they wanted. Prompting wasn’t developed by AI experts in the start; instead, it came up as a necessary feature while AI was evolving.

What’s ahead for Bard: More global, more visual, more integrated

Text reads "Bard at Google I/O" next to four multicolored stripes

It’s been less than two months since we launched Bard, our experiment that lets you collaborate with generative AI, and I’m amazed to see the creative and imaginative ways people have interacted with it. (I, for one, have gotten some really fun ideas to help teach my 7-year old fractions!)

Since we rolled out Bard — initially in the U.S. and the U.K. — we’ve gotten quite a bit of feedback and have adapted quickly to make your experience with it even better. We recently moved Bard to PaLM 2, a far more capable large language model, which has enabled many of our recent improvements — including advanced math and reasoning skills and coding capabilities. In the past few weeks, coding has already become one of the most popular things people do with Bard.

But this early momentum is just the beginning. Today we’re introducing new ways for you to collaborate with Bard, and we’re sharing a bit more about our vision for what’s ahead.

Ciphers Lab is a USA-based Digital Product Studio, that provides services like Web App design & development, Mobile Application design & development, UI/UX, Chatbot development, E-commerce development, Designing & Branding, Social Media Marketing, and virtual CTO. Bringing Bard to more people

As we continue to make additional improvements and introduce new features, we want to get Bard into more people’s hands so they can try it out and share their feedback with us. So today we’re removing the waitlist and opening up Bard to over 180 countries and territories — with more coming soon.

Animation showing text: 180+ countries and territories in English

Not just that: Bard is now available in Japanese and Korean, and we’re on track to support 40 languages soon. As we’ve said from the beginning, large language models are still a nascent technology with known limitations. So as we further expand, we’ll continue to maintain our high standards for quality and local nuances while also ensuring we adhere to our AI Principles.

Ciphers Lab is a USA-based Digital Product Studio, that provides services like Web App design & development, Mobile Application design & development, UI/UX, Chatbot development, E-commerce development, Designing & Branding, Social Media Marketing, and virtual CTO. Making your interactions with Bard more visual

Coming soon, Bard will become more visual both in its responses and your prompts. You’ll be able to ask it things like, “What are some must-see sights in New Orleans?” — and in addition to text, you’ll get a helpful response along with rich visuals to give you a much better sense of what you’re exploring.

Bard query asking about must-see sights in New Orleans. Results show images and text.

You’ll also be able to include images — alongside text — in your own prompts, allowing you to boost your imagination and creativity in completely new ways. To make this happen, we’re bringing the power of Google Lens right into Bard. Let’s say you want to have some fun using a photo of your dogs. You can upload it and prompt Bard to “write a funny caption about these two.” Using Google Lens, Bard will analyze the photo, detect the dogs’ breeds, and draft a few creative captions — all within seconds.

Animation showing photo of two dogs, then a Bard prompt asking to create a funny story starring the dogs.

Introducing coding upgrades and export features

It’s imperative that we build Bard alongside people, because feedback is key to making it better. As part of that effort, we’re incorporating developers’ feedback into a few key coding upgrades, including the following:

  • Source citations: Starting next week, we'll make citations even more precise. If Bard brings in a block of code or cites other content, just click the annotation and Bard will underline those parts of the response and link to the source.
  • Dark theme: Today we’re launching Dark theme, which is another feature developers have asked for — and one we think will help make interacting with Bard a lot easier on your eyes.
  • “Export” Button: We've heard that developers love the export to Colab feature, so coming soon, we're adding the ability to export and run code with our partner Replit, starting with Python.

And since people often ask Bard for a head start drafting emails and documents, today we’re launching two more Export Actions, making it easy to move Bard’s responses right into Gmail and Docs. For example, let’s say — like me — you’re a die-hard pickleball fan. You can ask Bard to write an email invitation for your new pickleball league, summarizing the rules of the game and highlighting its inclusivity of all ages and levels. Just click the “draft in Gmail” button so you can make those final tweaks before getting your pickleball league off the ground.

Connecting Bard with the services you love

Looking ahead, we’ll introduce new ways to fuel your imagination and curiosity by integrating the capabilities of Google apps and services you may already use — Docs, Drive, Gmail, Maps and others — right into the Bard experience. And of course, you’ll always be in control of your privacy settings when deciding how you want to use these tools and extensions.

Bard will also be able to tap into all kinds of services from across the web, with extensions from outside partners, to let you do things never before possible. In the coming months, we’ll integrate Adobe Firefly, Adobe’s family of creative generative AI models, into Bard so you can easily and quickly turn your own creative ideas into high-quality images, which you can then edit further or add to your designs in Adobe Express.

Let’s say I’m planning a birthday party for my 7-year-old who loves unicorns, and I want a fun image to send out with the invitations. All I have to do is ask Bard: “Make an image of a unicorn and a cake at a kids party” — and it’ll generate an image within seconds, all while adhering to Adobe’s high standards for quality and ethical responsibility.

Bard prompt asking to create an image of a unicorn with birthday cake

We want Bard to be a home for your creativity, productivity and curiosity — so we’re working to connect Bard with helpful Google apps and many more partners, including Kayak, OpenTable, ZipRecruiter, Instacart, Wolfram and Khan Academy.

There’s a lot ahead for Bard — connecting tools from Google and amazing services across the web, to help you do and create anything you can imagine, through a fluid collaboration with our most capable large language models. When we combine human imagination with Bard’s generative AI capabilities, the possibilities are boundless. We can’t wait to see what you create with it.
